About this curriculum

Through geography, all children regardless of need or barrier will discover a sense of wonder about the world around them and the wider world. High expectations incorporated with quality geography teaching will inspire all children to be curious about the world and the people in it. They will learn how understanding the complexities of the world, appreciating the diversity of culture helps bridge divides and bring people together. They are given opportunities to make comparisons to other localities in order to help them widen their horizons.

They will learn how their environment impacts their lives living in Torbay and how their lives impact the immediate environment.

At Cockington we recognise the importance of safeguarding the earth for future generations and understanding the impact this can have on Torbay and globally.  We teach children to care for the world, to commit to a sustainable future and develop global climate ambassadors with the knowledge that they can make a difference.

We are incredibly proud of our Year 5/6 netball teams, who represented Cockington Primary School brilliantly at the School Games netball tournament yesterday! 🏐 We entered two teams, and both showed fantastic teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the day. Their hard work paid off, with one of our teams securing bronze medals 🥉 A huge well done to all of the children involved – you represented our school wonderfully and made us all very proud! 👏

🌟 We’re incredibly proud to celebrate a fantastic achievement! 🌟 Angela was a finalist in the BBC 500 Words competition with her brilliant short story, Scruffy Savior. 📚 Her story showed fantastic imagination and creativity, perfectly reflecting our school values through Creative Colin and Aspirational Annie. As part of this amazing achievement, Angela was invited to a special celebration at Windsor Castle — an unforgettable experience and a very well-deserved honour. You can read Angela’s wonderful story here: 🔗 https://shorturl.at/IKm39 👏 Congratulations, Angela — we are all so proud of you!

Our Year 6 children went on a visit to Plymouth National Marine Aquarium earlier in the week. The children's behaviour was great, the children asked brilliant questions and they all had a fantastic day! The teachers are now looking forward to reflecting on all that they learned during their geography and science lessons this half term.

World Book Day! We have been enjoying immersing ourselves into the book 'Shh! We have a plan'. The school staff have dressed up from the characters of the book. We have also enjoyed reading and sharing books. We will be continuing to share and write stories over the next couple of days.

Red Deer Year 3 Dartmoor Adventure! Last week, Red Deer have enjoyed the unusually dry weather to enjoy a one night residential on Dartmoor. They travelled to Cadover bridge and made their way along the River Plym to the cottage at Dewerstone. Once they had settled into their bedrooms and made their beds, they enjoyed preparing their potatoes for their evening meal. We went to have some fun and make the most of the sun by playing some games outside. After dinner, they went on a night walk where they turned off their torches to see how much they could see in the dark. They enjoyed rock scrambling the next day, competing challenges along the way. All in all they had a fantastic time! Thank you to all the grown ups who went with them and made the visit possible. We hope they weren't too muddy when they got home!

🏃‍♂️🏅 Year 6 Launch Their Athletics Unit 🏅🏃‍♀️ Year 6 have made an excellent start to their athletics unit this week, focusing on developing jumping technique and understanding the importance of personal improvement. Pupils worked on their standing long jump, learning how to generate power through strong arm drive and controlled take-off and landing. It was particularly pleasing to see the teamwork on display, with children measuring accurately, supporting their peers and offering thoughtful feedback to help each other improve. Throughout the lesson, pupils were reminded that being an athlete is about resilience, determination and striving for personal bests — values that were clearly demonstrated by all. Well done, Year 6 — we look forward to seeing their progress over the coming weeks!
