About this curriculum

Through geography, all children regardless of need or barrier will discover a sense of wonder about the world around them and the wider world. High expectations incorporated with quality geography teaching will inspire all children to be curious about the world and the people in it. They will learn how understanding the complexities of the world, appreciating the diversity of culture helps bridge divides and bring people together. They are given opportunities to make comparisons to other localities in order to help them widen their horizons.

They will learn how their environment impacts their lives living in Torbay and how their lives impact the immediate environment.

At Cockington we recognise the importance of safeguarding the earth for future generations and understanding the impact this can have on Torbay and globally.  We teach children to care for the world, to commit to a sustainable future and develop global climate ambassadors with the knowledge that they can make a difference.

On Wednesday, Year 2 went on a school trip to London! Well...a virtual trip. We acted like a tube train and travelled around the school with our Oyster cards in hand. At each 'station', we scanned a QR code and watched a video showing a special landmark in London. This half term, we'll be learning about why London is such an important place.

What an incredible day our Year 5s had at Torquay Museum as they kicked off their new history topic! The children were amazed to see a real mummified body named Psamtech, a 6-year-old boy from ancient Egypt! As part of their learning, the children also had a go at writing their names in hieroglyphs and creating their own scarab beetles. It was a fantastic hands-on day that really brought history to life - a perfect way to start our new topic!

Today, some Y6 representatives went to ASDA to help with the poppy appeal. They were such a credit to the school and were so polite to the members of the public.

Year 3 have started their history topic on the Maya Civilisation. We have had a great afternoon doing Maya Maths, designing festival masks, drinking hot chocolate - not quite the original version - and learning to play Pok Ta Pok. Pok Ta Pok is believed to be the first ball game invented, and is very tricky to play! No hands, feet or heada are allowed to touch the ball.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Thank you so much to the friends of Torquay Station, parents, children and idverde for making our den building area a mud free zone! We had a delivery of four trailers and between us, we managed to avoid the showers and spread out the wood chippings. We are looking forward to sharing this with the children on the first day back on the 3rd November. Thank you everyone again!

As part of our outcome, year 5 have worked hard to design and make their final clay and wire sculptures. A special thank you to Cockington Court, who have very kindly allowed us to display them. Over the next few weeks, you can visit and admire the childrens' hard work at the Sea Change Studios.

Castle Circus Project We were very excited to see our entries for the 'selfie stations' displayed in the window of some of the shops at the top end of Union Street. Some of our entries have been turned into full size paintings and we're excited to see which ones will be next! Well done to all of our children who entered to reinvigorate this part of Torquay town centre.

We are having great fun with some new equipment outside for our OPAL play. We have some new soft shapes, some wheelie chairs and parents have donated some cable reels and dressing up clothes recently. Our Cockington PTA have paid for some crates, new bubble machines and some more site down wheelie boards! We are always looking for more items to keep our play fun and creative. If you are able to source any of the following items we would be most grateful! Thank you!

We have enjoyed using our crossing patrol over the last couple of weeks. Please remember to wait on the pavement until you are told it's OK to cross. The crossing patrol will make their way into the road first, stop the traffic, then signal that it's safe for you to cross.
