About this curriculum

Through geography, all children regardless of need or barrier will discover a sense of wonder about the world around them and the wider world. High expectations incorporated with quality geography teaching will inspire all children to be curious about the world and the people in it. They will learn how understanding the complexities of the world, appreciating the diversity of culture helps bridge divides and bring people together. They are given opportunities to make comparisons to other localities in order to help them widen their horizons.

They will learn how their environment impacts their lives living in Torbay and how their lives impact the immediate environment.

At Cockington we recognise the importance of safeguarding the earth for future generations and understanding the impact this can have on Torbay and globally.  We teach children to care for the world, to commit to a sustainable future and develop global climate ambassadors with the knowledge that they can make a difference.

Year 5 & 6 Finals Day at Coach Road Both our boys and girls teams wrapped up their incredible seasons in style at Coach Road, Newton Abbot – a fitting stage for all their hard work and progress this year. Our girls team gave it everything and bowed out at the semi-final stage, showing great resilience and teamwork throughout. A huge highlight for them this season was proudly representing Torquay United at a regional tournament – an unforgettable experience and a true testament to their growth and spirit! The boys team put in a determined performance, winning their semi-final 2-1 in a tense and closely-fought game. They carried that momentum into the Plate Final, delivering an outstanding 5-0 victory! This marks their first tournament win – a brilliant reward after finishing runners-up in their previous four competitions. A massive WELL DONE to everyone who has represented Cockington this year. Your commitment, teamwork, and passion have made the whole school proud!

Year 6's WW2 outcome day was a huge success and we all got thoroughly into the wartime spirit. There was: Cypher School - cracking morse code messages Make Do and Mend - learning to sew a button and thread a needle Afternoon tea - spam or jam sandwiches and real tea Dig for Victory - helping in our garden Run Rabbit Run - learning about wartime food and how to prepare PT drill - putting them through their paces Sing-along - learning a WW2 classic by Vera Lynn Postcards Home - writing to loved ones about their time as an evacuee We even had a few air raid siren practises. Finally, a Photo Booth moment; I’ll pop the photos on Seesaw for all to enjoy! We then tested our finished Anderson Shelters and evaluated them before getting back to rehearsals for our show.

This week we returned to the train station. The children planted marigolds and begonias into the beds of 4 palm trees at the side of Platform 1. We then crossed over the bridge and had a tidy and sweep of the garden area, watering the plants on this hot, summer's afternoon. We're looking forward to returning soon to help plant even more flowers ready for our autumn visitors to Torquay to enjoy.

Today the Performing Arts club were invited to sing at Cricketfield Community Garden in Torquay as part of their summer picnic event. A small group performed and they entertained the crowd with their fantastic repertoire of songs. This was the last time they will perform this year. A special thank you to Mrs Shorter and Mrs Goad for all of their hard work in making the club and performances a real success this year!

Gardening club! Another lovely sunny afternoon in our Cockington garden. The children picked the ripe courgettes - some of which are round and look like green pumpkins. They then used these in a recipe to make cheese and courgette scones. They smelt delicious! The children then helped to plant a variety of vegetables in the planters: purple French dwarf beans, butternut squash, asparagus peas and broccoli. They even tried some ripe blackcurrants and peas. We're looking forward to our second trip to Torquay train station next week too.

Wow! Thank you so much for supporting our PTA summer(?) fair today. We held it inside as the weather forecast torrential rain from 4pm, although this didn’t actually happen until later! We had such great fun with soak the teacher, the tombolas and penalty shootouts. It was great to see the Mario Kart challenge hotly contested and we all loved the glitter tattoos! Thank you to the PTA and head chef for the hot food. Thank you to everyone who attended, and helped us raise funds for the school. We’ll let you now the final amount raised soon!

Mrs Goad and Mrs Shorter had a fantastic day at the Torbay Arts in Schools Network (TASN) with Doorstep Arts. It was a wonderful day of workshops and lively discussions, which may lead to some exciting events at the school in future! The setting of Torre Abbey was, of course, stunning, and provided a gorgeous background to the important business of enriching Torbay's children's culture through the arts.

Yesterday, Cockington proudly hosted Preston Primary School for a series of exciting netball matches. Both our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 teams showcased outstanding teamwork, with excellent shooting, sharp passing, and strong collaboration on the court. Their hard work paid off, as Cockington emerged victorious in both matches! A big well done to all the players for their effort and sportsmanship.
